The government has just announced it. A large part of the Alpes-Maritimes will be under lockdown this weekend.
“It has been decided, and it’s a difficult decision, to extend the lockdown for this weekend.” The words of the government spokesperson, Gabriel Attal, are unequivocal. After being locked down for the past two weekends, the people of Nice will have to wait before being able to fully enjoy their weekend. Indeed, the government has extended the lockdown.
From Friday 6 PM until Monday 6 AM, no movement will be allowed, except with a special exemption certificate. The situation remains concerning in the hospitals of the Alpes-Maritimes, and the incidence rate is also very high, especially in the Nice metropolitan area.
A new assessment will be made next week
Christian Estrosi, mayor of the city of Nice, quickly reacted to this announcement: “I acknowledge the decision to extend the weekend lockdown made by the government even if it was not my recommendation. I am convening the scientific council of the city of Nice tonight to gather its opinion on measures to promote outdoor activities.”
In total, around sixty municipalities in the department are affected by this announcement. “A point will be made next week to assess if the decrease in incidence and the epidemic in the department continues,” explains Gabriel Attal. In case of improvement, the possibility of a return to normal life might be considered. But we must be patient and stay home for one more weekend.
Charles-Ange Ginésy’s anger
Charles-Ange Ginésy did not hide his frustration after this announcement. “Extension of partial lockdown: to slow down the spread of the virus, the response should be massive vaccination! I regret the decision made by the Government, despite territorial realities and the observation that we can make: the sanitary effectiveness of the partial lockdown is yet to be proven and has so far shown only a very limited effect. It heavily impacts a whole sector of our economy and professionals in our area,” explains the president of the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council.
Charles-Ange Ginésy fears the ineffectiveness of the current measure: “If we are once again depriving the people of Alpes-Maritimes of their freedom, it must come with one condition: a massive vaccination campaign. While I have lamented for many weeks the too small supplies we had, the vaccination campaign finally saw a jump last weekend. For this third lockdown weekend, this momentum must not weaken: instead of a sterile lockdown, I call on the Government for new massive deliveries for the Alpes-Maritimes department! I offer my full support to the people of Alpes-Maritimes for this new lockdown weekend.”
