This Friday, Christian Estrosi inaugurated the exhibition “Pierre Matisse, an Art Dealer in New York,” recognized as being of national interest by the Ministry of Culture. By dedicating a major exhibition to Pierre Matisse, the Matisse Museum reflects on the exceptional journey of Henri Matisse’s youngest son, an art dealer in New York and a pivotal figure in the world of modern art.
“This exhibition is the highlight of Nice’s cultural programming and traces Pierre Matisse’s odyssey with nearly 70 works by 23 artists from the gallery and 15 works loaned by the Centre Pompidou,” commented the Mayor of Nice.
For nearly sixty years, the Pierre Matisse Gallery played a significant role in promoting modern French and European art in the United States. Pierre Matisse worked to build reputations and enhance the American careers of the gallery’s major figures (Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet, Marc Chagall…). The exhibition Pierre Matisse, an Art Dealer in New York retraces this journey through nearly seventy works by twenty-three key artists from the gallery.
From the “Pierre Matisse” dation to the French State, which the National Museum of Modern Art – Centre Pompidou was beneficiary of, fifteen masterpieces are presented that the Parisian institution generously loaned to the Matisse Museum.
This new collaboration between the two institutions has established a multi-year partnership agreement between the City of Nice (Matisse Museum and MAMAC) and the Centre Pompidou, recently signed by Serge Lasvignes, President of the Centre Pompidou, and Christian Estrosi, who commented on this act: “Great steps are being forged for Nice and will strengthen the ties between the Centre Pompidou and our museums, a partnership that plays a key role in our ambition to make our city the future European Capital of Culture.”
