This Friday, March 15th, Mr. Christophe Mirmand, Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, and Eric Ciotti, Deputy and President of the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes, will sign the agreement regarding the transfer of authority and ownership of the public section of the Var River to the benefit of the Department of Alpes-Maritimes.
Upon this signing, the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes will become the official manager of the Var River, which was previously the responsibility of the State.
The section of the public river domain of the Var River concerned by this transfer of authority and ownership is between the confluence of the Vรฉsubie and the mouth at sea, approximately a length of 21 km. Only the water police remain under the State’s jurisdiction. The transferred domain also includes the terminal part of 18 valleys on the left bank.
The Var River, an emblematic watercourse of the Department
The General Council will thus be able to manage this space according to the challenges of the lower Var valley: flood risk prevention, preservation of a strategic water resource for the department, conservation of the river’s biodiversity (Natura 2000 site)…
The Department is already the manager of most of the dikes in the lower Var valley, for which it ensures monitoring and maintenance.
By taking on the Var, the General Council affirms its commitment to protecting the population and preserving the environmental richness of the site.
