jpg_logo_CGIE-2.jpgA major meeting of the General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE) will be held in Nice from March 18 to 20, 2010.

The CGIE is organized into a Plenary Assembly that meets at least twice a year in Rome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and there is an organization by geographical area; this week, it is in Nice that the Europe-North Africa continental commission will meet.

The issues that will be addressed are as follows:

  • Problems related to the development of Italian language and culture courses in view of the budget cuts imposed by the Italian state finance law.
  • The situation of the Consular network in light of the potential closures of Italian Consulates in Europe.
  • Reform of the representation of Italians abroad (Comites, CGIE). Analysis of the bills under discussion in the Italian Parliament.

  • Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

According to the instructions of Mr. Bruno Capaldi, CGIE Advisor for France, the schedule is as follows:

On Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m., the traditional meeting of the CGIE and Italian representatives of the French Riviera will take place in the Michelangelo salon of the Italian Consulate.

This year, the meeting is enriched by the presence of the 13 Presidents of the Comites of France, who took advantage of the presence of the CGIE Continental Commission in Nice to meet.

Alongside the presence of the Ministry’s leaders, represented by the Director General of the Migration Policies and Italians in the World Service, Minister Plenipotentiary Carla Zuppetti, there will also be the presence of Italian parliamentarians elected abroad.

A final cocktail will be offered by the Comites and the Consul General, Mr. Agostino Lionello Chiesa Alciator, attended by local authorities including:

  • Mr. Rudy Salles, deputy of A.M., deputy mayor of Nice and Vice-President of the National Assembly,
  • Mr. Olivier Bettati, deputy mayor of Nice,

  • Mr. Eric Ciotti, deputy of A.M. and President of the CG06,

  • Mr. Patrick Allemand, 1st Vice-President of the PACA Region.
