It will ultimately be the General Council that will take control of the Port of Nice, as decided by the Regional Prefect, Christian Frรฉmont, ending a head-to-head between the departmental body and the regional entity that had both submitted bids in response to the call for proposals within the framework of the decentralization law.
This is not the General Councilโs first port since five ports along the coast (Cannes, Villefranche-darse, Villefranche-santรฉ, Golfe Juan, and Menton) are already managed by the departmental institution.
This change of ownership does not disrupt the management of the Port of Nice, which continues to be handled by the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the current manager of the Port of Nice until the end of its concession in 2027.
As of now, the Port of Nice is home to more than 130 businesses employing 1,400 people in various sectors such as commerce, rental, boat building and maintenance, sports activities, and maritime transport, which remains one of its highlight activities with more than a million passengers between Corsica-mainland traffic and cruise passengers.
Regarding freight transport, more than 300,000 tons per year pass through the Nice cement plant. As for pleasure boating, there are 24 large pleasure berths and 500 moorings offered to boat owners, with more than half of these spots already reserved for the year.
A new boss for a new future for the Port of Nice? Only time will tell!
