The Grand Escurial is an institution in Nice, and the former cinema, which was predicted to become a supermarket, might just save its skin. Indeed, Christian Estrosi, the Deputy Mayor of Nice, opposes this project, envisioning a more cultural role for this key spot in the musicians’ district.
“I was stunned to learn from reading Nice Matin that the great Escurial, a legendary hall in Nice, risked being transformed into a supermarket. I want to reassure all the people of Nice that I will oppose, with all my might, allowing this place so dear to everyone to be thus debased. As part of the policy of coherent and sustainable urban development that I lead with my entire municipal team, installing a supermarket would completely contradict the revaluation of this district, which has been neglected for so long.
The Grand Escurial is part of the heritage of the city of Nice and must be preserved and restored to its former cultural role at the heart of Niçois life, of which it has been a jewel since the 1930s.
The city of Nice is ready to meet as soon as possible with the owner of the building, Mr. Joël Olindo, to find a solution that allows the Grand Escurial to rise from its ashes.”
