The year 2019 marks the hundredth anniversary of the Victorine Studios. The studios have welcomed the greatest directors and the most prestigious artists to shoot there. It must be admitted, Nice is the ideal setting for cinema, and for 123 years, directors have come to film their movies there. From silent to sound, from the early days of this art born from the talent of the Lumière brothers, to the most daring productions. All genres have been explored.
The artistic and cultural year of 2019 is dedicated to cinema, and the Masséna Museum will pay tribute to it: 123 years of films, adventures, thousands of kilometers of film reels, photos, actors, stars, a retrospective of this cinematic history in Nice. Given the successes of 2013: A Summer for Matisse; 2015: Promenade des Anglais; 2017: Ecole de Nice, it is expected that this 2019 edition will experience the same enthusiasm from the public. The Odyssey of cinema from the first films of the late 19th century to today.
It is an opportunity to rediscover old snapshots, old sepia photos, those artists of silent and sound cinema. Cinema was born in La Ciotat with the monstrous locomotive entering the station. The effect was fascinating, with the audience caught between fear and fascination. Since then, it has become somewhat a part of us. We often say, “to make one’s cinema.” Here is the chance to prove it.
