After being closed for renovation, the majestic room of the Palais Lascaris, located in the heart of Old Nice, is once again accessible to the public.

For about two months, the emblematic Grand Salon of the Palais Lascaris remained closed, due to undergoing some renovations. Part of the tiles in this room had come loose “as a result of hygrometric variations.”

During a City Council session on November 9th, Gรฉrard Baudoux, deputy to the Mayor of Nice and delegate for historical heritage, reassured the public about the progress of the works. The deputy announced that the issues had been “perfectly identified” and that the work was “in progress.” In addition to the abnormal elevation of the tiles, he mentioned “a wall that was getting damp.”

The city of Nice claims to be “keen to protect its emblematic heritage to the fullest.” This building, listed as a historic monument since 1946 and owned by the city of Nice since 1942, underwent these works with the agreement of the architect of the Historical Buildings of France and Monuments Historiques, as procedures dictate.

A 17th-Century Fresco to Admire

Since December 8th, visitors can once again visit this part of the Palais Lascaris. Built by the Lascaris-Vintimille Counts in 1648, it is a true heritage treasure. The Grand Salon houses a fresco depicting the Fall of Phaeton, dating from the 17th century. This work is attributed to a painter from the Genoese school.

The collections of this museum dedicated to art and music have additionally recently been enriched by the deposit of two aristocratic furniture pieces (a Florentine cabinet and a sedan chair) dated from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Palais Lascaris also offers the exposition โ€œLiving for Art. The Trachel and Rothschild Collections in Niceโ€ up until May 20, 2024. It allows the appreciation of a large portion of the 1,700 works donated by the two families. This exposition is also available at the Jules Chรฉret Museum of Fine Arts and the Massena Museum until April 28.
