This Monday, March 18, the official presentation of the Grand Start and the first two stages of the 2020 Tour de France took place. The conference was held at the Nice Opera House in the presence of Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis, Yann Le Moenner, CEO of Amaury Sport, Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France and the events, and finally Thierry Gouvenou, the Tour de France’s Sports Manager.
It is official, the Tour de France will indeed start from Nice in June 2020. The first two stages will also take place in the region, with the route being revealed during the presentation. “If we fight for the Tour de France, it is out of love for cycling and the big names in this sport. The economic stakes are very significant for the city of Nice,” declared Christian Estrosi.
The Tour de France is the biggest cycling competition in the world, attracting several million spectators and broadcast in nearly 180 countries. This event will have positive impacts, particularly for the hotel and restaurant sectors. A digital communication campaign is already underway under the name “Nice Cycling Paradise.”
In addition to the Grand Start, two stages will take place in the department:
- 1st stage on June 27, 2020: A small loop in two 50km laps through the middle part of the Nice area, and a large one in a single 70km lap, which partially covers the first. This route passes near the towns of Tourettes-Levens, Saint-Martin du Var, and Aspremont.
- 2nd stage on June 28, 2020: 190km through the upper part of the Nice area, passing through the Col de la Colmiane and the Col de Turini (14km with a 7.3% gradient).
The start of the two events will be from Place Massรฉna. Of course, numerous activities are expected to take place on the occasion of this event. “We want to offer an exceptional playground for the riders and a spectacle for all visitors,” said Christian Prudhomme.
