Greenpeace France has launched the “Veggie Tour,” a national tour with a solar-powered caravan to better understand vegetarian cuisine.
Starting on May 11th in Bordeaux, the “Veggie Tour” stops this Saturday in Nice before heading to Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand, and finally Paris.
The message is starting to get through: to protect the climate, biodiversity, and our health, it is urgent to reduce our consumption of animal proteins. Without necessarily eliminating meat and dairy products completely, behaviors need to evolve, and from childhood, we must learn to replace steaks and nuggets with legumes and other plant-based proteins. And this is where the problem lies because in the kitchen, inspiration is often lacking. This Sunday, two vegetarian cooking workshops will take place. In parallel, the local Greenpeace Nice group will hold an awareness stand, with educational activities. The public can also sign the local petition calling for more vegetarian meals in the city’s school cafeterias.
The workshops will take place from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Parvis de la Gare du Sud.
Two vegetarian meals in cafeterias by 2020
The “Veggie Tour” is also an opportunity to remind people of the Green Canteens Nice collective’s (which includes the local Greenpeace group) demand for the introduction of two mandatory vegetarian meals in Nice’s cafeterias by 2020. The city hall has already implemented vegetarian menus as an option, but this is not enough. It has committed to introducing one mandatory vegetarian menu per week from September 2019, as required by the EGAlim law.
Given the environmental and climate emergencies, the Green Canteens Nice collective is asking the city hall to go further and increase to two vegetarian menus for everyone, per week, by the end of the year. Moreover, the proportion of organic and local products offered to children should reach 50% by the end of 2020.
This would also benefit farmers by promoting local purchases. Large cities like Grenoble or Lille have already done so.
