Every year, on October 17, the world comes together for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This event, launched in 1987 by Father Joseph Wresinski, founder of the ATD Fourth World movement, raises awareness about poverty and inequality.
Poverty is not just a lack of material resources. It affects human dignity and deprives people of their rights and voice. Misery isolates, marginalizes, and breaks social bonds. In Nice, this day has a special significance. The Nice CCAS, in partnership with local associations like NAGA, organizes a private event for the beneficiaries of day and night shelters.
A moment of reflection is planned to honor the homeless individuals who passed away this year. This will be followed by a warm and friendly meal at the โLe Phareโ reception center. The goal is to share a moment of solidarity, listening, and exchange. This offered meal helps strengthen the bonds between people in precarious situations and social actors.
A Strong Commitment
The CCAS provides valuable assistance to populations in difficulty, whether through housing, social support, or food aid. These services are essential in meeting the immediate needs of vulnerable individuals. They also work towards their reintegration into society.
This day is also an occasion to recognize the work of social workers, volunteers, and associations like NAGA. These grassroots actors enable those living in precarious conditions to express themselves and share their stories. The testimony collection project, conducted by NAGA, will be presented at the event. This project gives a voice to the homeless, reflecting their stories and experiences with sincerity. It is also available for free on the NagaZine website.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty serves as a reminder that the fight against poverty is a collective effort. It is not only about addressing immediate needs but also tackling the causes of exclusion. This day is a call to build a fairer and more united world together.
