In order to promote the practice of chess among the major sports taught to young students in schools across all areas of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, the Nice-Alekhine Chess Club and the University of Nice organized the International Rapid Masters Nice Metropole last Sunday in Nice, at the Saint-Jean d’Angely campus.
Limited to 50 participants, this high-level competition had a prize fund of €9,000 provided by FxPro, the event’s sponsor, and the President of Nice Alekhine.
An exceptional lineup of International Grandmasters (IGMs) was associated with this major sporting event: Arkadi Nayditsch (current German champion, ranked 20th in the world), Etienne Bacrot (French Blitz champion, ranked 21st in the world), Alexandr Fier (2011 and current Coppa America champion, Brazilian champion), Pavel Tregubov (2000 European individual champion), and Croatian IGM Nenad Sulava, as well as numerous young French champions from French clubs who participated in the recent French Youth Championships in Nîmes.
