From 7 o’clock in the morning, athletes will dive into the water at Larvotto for two loops with an Australian exit on the beach. They will mount their bikes for an 88 km ride through French territory, and then 1 km through the Principality. The frenetic race will continue in the Principality, with 4.5 semi-marathon loops. After four and a half hours of competition, the champions are expected around noon, at the finish line, between the Hôtel de Paris and the Casino.
After the effort comes the comfort. Numerous festivities will take place at the Fontvieille marquee. The celebration will begin at 6 PM, with a “pasta party” bringing together athletes, VIPs, and organizers. The award ceremony will take place at 8 PM, followed by dinner and a party for the athletes and volunteers.
The public will not be left out of this celebration of sport and health. Throughout the competition, organizers will offer free entertainment with speakers and DJs. Additionally, the final jump is offered free of charge to spectators in the grandstands at the finish line.
The athletes participating in the race are largely former Ironman winners. Belgian Luc Van Lierde holds the world Ironman record (7:50:27). The champion has won 5 Ironman titles, including two in Hawaii. Australian Chris MacCormack is a 4-time Ironman Australia champion, world champion, and 1997 World Cup champion. The formidable Spaniard Marcel Zamora won Ironman Nice in June and promises a spectacular return. The highlight of the show is the participation of Australian Michelle Dillon, winner of the latest world Duathlon championships and 6th in the Triathlon at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
But no prejudices. At the Ironman, any athlete declared fit can participate in the event. Also, the extreme ages of the athletes range from 18 to 68 years. For 201 of them, this race is their first Ironman.
The 70.3 competition is the most known and loved by triathletes, sponsors, and international media. The stakes for Monaco are significant. The event attracts tourists and sportspeople who come with families and stay an average of 6 nights in the region of the event, representing a considerable gain in terms of image and tourist returns.
