The 29th Jacques Audiberti literary prize is awarded this year to: Sylvain Tesson for his body of work. Sylvain Tesson, author of travel narratives, short stories, and essays; his latest work from 2018, “A Summer with Homer,” was also presented during a press lunch at the Villa Eilenroc in Antibes.

Sylvain Tesson, coming from the ร‰cole Normale Supรฉrieure, with studies in Hypokhรขgne and Khรขgne, is above all an adventurous travelerโ€”a kind of globetrotter. He has bicycled around the world, crossed the Himalayas on foot, and accomplished many other feats solo or with friends. From all these extreme travels, he draws books. In 2012 he retraced the path of the Russian retreat by motorcycle, following in the footsteps of Napoleon I two centuries earlier.

The man needs no introduction, as he will be received as a naval writer with the rank of frigate captain.

His latest work invites us to follow Ulysses step by step across the Mediterranean. Homer and Ulysses, inseparable companions? The author and his hero, who is Ulysses, or rather who is Homer? Two questions without real answers.

The wandering energy. Sylvain Tesson explains this pleasure of diving back into the work of Homer, from Antiquity. The sages of ancient Greece knew how to see beyond the facade of our modern societies. Is Sylvain Tesson an old sage?

The wisdom of the ancient Greeks, the Hellenes. Sylvain Tesson pays tribute to Jacques Audiberti, after whom the prize is named. He evokes his love of life, flesh, and sensuality: “I do not want to choose between the law of the panther and the hope of forgiveness,” Audiberti said. Sylvain Tesson adds forcefully: “We must return to joy and gaiety, the god of the world is pleasure!” A philosophy, a new wisdom.

The prize should have been given to Homer, the winner of the 29th Jacques Audiberti prize concluded. After inviting the participants to lunch, Sylvain Tesson added: “The tablecloth is the shroud of animals!” In the end, everything is summed up in this phrase.
