From Kino Montreal to Kino Nice

Kino was born in 1999 in Montreal by three students because at that time, thinking that the end of the world was approaching, these three students decided to make as many short films as possible with the available resources for fun.

As you know, the end of the world was false, the concept grew, and today there are numerous Kino cells in Central Africa, Europe including France, Asia (only in China), Oceania, Africa, and the United States.

With 15 active members on the association’s staff, the creation of Kino Nice was initiated by the president Clรฉment Garretey.

Originally from Bordeaux, he was part of the Kino Session staff in Bordeaux, which was the largest Kino cell in France for years.

It was when he came to Nice for his psychology studies that he created a Kino cell in Nice.

The Kino Nice Association

Kino Nice is an association with the goal of democratizing and assisting in audiovisual creation already in Nice and in the region as the association develops.

With several advertisements and project preparations under its belt, including their first partnership with Hรฉliotrope during Short Film Week, the current goal of Kino Nice is to expand the association, recruit new members and directors to produce multiple short films, and attract many people to raise awareness and grow.

Types of Events at Kino Nice

The Kino Nice association has existed for a year and offers four types of events.

The first event is the “Kino Session” organized every two months, proposing a theme and a filming constraint.

Many people can register as directors, and the association offers short films lasting about 7 minutes, depending on the director’s choice.

Two weeks after the first session, there is “Kino Dating.โ€

These are exchange evenings between those participating in the shoots and interested or curious people.

Whether you are a director, actor, sound engineer, makeup artist, or other, everyone introduces themselves with their role to offer their services or seek amateur or professional people to form project teams for the next session.

A week after the session preceding the dating, in partnership with the Crous de Nice, there are “audiovisual shooting initiations,” which take place over two evenings.

The first evening, led by the association’s president Clรฉment Garritey, is open to Kino Nice members and Nice students registered with the association.

This involves learning the basics of filming to create a “quickie” (30-second to 1-minute Kino), such as handling a camera, different shots, etc.

Once filmed, the following Friday, there is the “initiation to editing,” which is a fairly concise editing course.

The association shows the footage shot on Monday, and these films will be screened at the next Kino distribution.

Finally, also in partnership with the Crous de Nice, there is “screening at the university restaurant.”

The state wanted to animate university restaurants in France, and that is how the Crous de Nice contacted Kino Nice to set up a screening of their short films at the Saint Jean Angely and Carlone faculties every three weeks.

The Audiovisual Aspect of Kino Nice

The association is primarily focused on audiovisual but is ready to help and meet people to create, according to their means and needs, audiovisual content that contributes to the cultural aspect of Nice.

Kino Nice occasionally changes venues, screening their short films in Niceโ€™s cultural venues like La Zonmรฉ, Friche 81, and the Espace Magnan.

The association attempts to feature their short films in young and well-known public places to introduce visitors to these Nice cultural locations, the latest being at the Carlone incubator.

Kino Nice primarily reaches young audiences, some of whom study information and communication, as well as actors in their thirties, and strives to engage diverse audiences.

The association’s short films have few limits; however, they can include various artistic, humorous, serious topics or even dance because it encompasses creation in all its forms in audiovisual.

These short films would depend on the directors, themes, and the message the author wanted to convey.

The films by registered directors are shown; however, if a director wishes to present their short film, even if the theme is not adhered to for a kino, they can showcase their video to share this passion for audiovisual with amateurs or professionals, and there is no prize awarded because everyone is equal.

The Kino Spirit

As the creators of Kino would say, “Do well with nothing, do better with little, but for Kino, do it now.”

This quote represents the Kino spirit because there is no judgment, meaning everyone creates their kino with what they have, even if the shots aren’t great, the short film can be funny, and there’s a real message.

The Kino spirit also transcends the notion that a good film can only be a major cinema production because anyone can create something and contribute greatly, providing an opportunity to do so.

On YouTube, with the replay, there is direct feedback from the public, allowing everyone to express their views without being overly harsh. This helps improve, create better videos, and meet people.

Thanks to the association, everyone can contribute something, whether a scriptwriter, an actor, etc. Many people have become passionate about audiovisual.

Advice for Future Members

Visit their Facebook page “Kino Nice” to contact them, get information, and sign up.

For those curious, you can watch their short films on their YouTube channel.

It is also a good experience in terms of audiovisual, creative, and human connections with great encounters, sharing good times, and discovering magnificent places.

Don’t fear short films that are better than others because in the Kino Nice association, everyone is equal.

Everyone is welcome, including beginners, because that’s how you practice and learn better, and the Kino Nice association would be delighted to welcome you.
