The Ministry of Culture has just registered the expertise related to perfume in the Pays de Grasse to the inventory of intangible cultural heritage of France. It must now decide whether to propose this candidacy to UNESCO.
Jean-Pierre Leleux, former mayor of Grasse, wishes to see the “culture of perfume plants, the knowledge of raw materials related to perfumery, and the art of composing perfumes” globally recognized, a know-how passed down from generation to generation since the 16th century in the Grasse region.
“We are seeking recognition for all these successive generations who have passed on exceptional know-how, some of which could disappear,” he says.
What about the candidacies of Nice for its Promenade des Anglais and the joint Franco-Italian candidacy for the Mercantour Natural Park? Of course, one candidacy does not prevent the others, each having its own legitimacy.
However, a regional traffic jam is not the best way to reach the destination! It is well known that in international organizations, there are national balances to be respected, and the cake must be shared among all or, at least, not eaten by just one!
