The landscape painters of the Côte d’Azur in the 19th century: Gardens in the city

Latest News

Yesterday evening at the Maison des Associations, Garibaldi Square, Alex Benvenuto, a member of the Editorial Board of the Nice magazine Lou Sourgentin, hosted a presentation conference on this literary work.

Winter tourism started at the beginning of the 19th century with wealthy winter visitors who fled the cold, the melancholy, or phthisis. Everything was readily available for the emergence of a landscape painting school: buyers, a site, colors, and light.

Yet, these painters often remain unknown to the general public. Beyond memory, Mossa, Fricero, Trachel, Costa, Combas, and Defer express their feelings about this landscape, its inhabitants, its customs, and in doing so, contribute to conveying a regional identity.

Behind these artists, extraordinary lives of work and unique destinies.
