The latest archaeological discoveries of the Church of Saint-François

A new phase in the archaeological excavation campaign of the Saint-François church. New elements have been discovered in this building, allowing for a better understanding of the history of this site and the evolution of the Saint-François neighborhood since the 13th century.

This discovery allows for the launch of a rehabilitation project of the Saint-François ensemble, composed of four major elements of Nice’s history.

– The communal palace, former city hall from 1576 to 1868,
– The church and Franciscan convent, whose oldest parts date back to the 13th century and constitute the most important ensemble from that era still standing in Nice,
– And the Saint-François tower.

This excavation campaign, launched a year ago, is part of an effort to reclaim and beautify the city of Nice. It will allow the city to reclaim its only heritage dating from the 13th century.

These historic buildings of the Saint-François square constitute an exceptional monumental ensemble due to their age and significance in the political and social history of Nice.

This rehabilitated ensemble will be dedicated to the history and culture of Nice and its county. The aim is to make it a museum of history. It will be a unique place in Nice, a cultural and exhibition venue connected to Nice’s history and tradition. The people of Nice will rediscover this building in all its dimensions in length and height.

“It is an extraordinary moment of fulfillment to explore one’s history. We have committed to restoring to Nice a part of its historical heritage,” emphasized Christian ESTROSI, the president of the Metropolis Nice Côte d’Azur.
