The “left-wing” groups in Nice criticize the Reporty security mobile app: from “Nice Together” to “Nice Snitching”?

Latest News

The representatives, in various capacities, of the left in Nice are adopting for themselves the expression “march separately, strike together,” erroneously attributed to Mao Tse-Tung but which, in reality, was pronounced by General Von Moltke* and made his own by the Chinese leader.

Will they be as brilliant tacticians as the German military leader whose successes on the battlefield validated the correctness of his theory?

Last week, Christian Estrosi presented the implementation of the mobile security application Reporty, with a broad intention of use (talks about 2000 voluntary “auxiliaries” among municipal agents).

For Robert Injey and Philippe Pellegrini (PCF), this initiative “marks a new step in the security drift.”

For them, the potential abuses of this system are numerous. Violation of privacy, proliferation of “vigilantes” seeking to unearth the slightest incivility or what they consider as such, numerous denunciations that are difficult to handle seriously, untrained “volunteer police auxiliaries” who might hinder real police officers more than help them…

Patrick Allemand (association Nice au Coeur and opposition municipal councillor) denounced it as “questionable in essence” and “unacceptable in form” and calls for “the creation of a collective and urges political, associative, and citizen forces that share this concern to come together so that we can provide an adequate and effective response to this situation.”

Xavier Garcia (PS) is also in favor of a citizen mobilization “against a pernicious drift.” His analysis is clear: “I personally do not want โ€” and I hope there are many of us โ€” to live in a society where everyone is watching everyone else.”

David Nakache (association Tous Citoyens) warns: “The mayor of Nice is violating CNIL rules and infringing on privacy rights.” Christian Estrosi advocates a model of society where distrust and denunciation become the norm.”

The subject of cross-checks is controversial. It is no coincidence that it was invented in Israel where, one might think, it is not used to report dog fouling!

In a completely different context, we will see in practice, even if doubts about abuses are legitimate without being proven.

In any case, it has already served a purpose: to find a common position among local political actors who, through division after division, have lost ground, audience, and find themselves weakened in debate and action.

A first step for future common battles?
