His father was a tenor saxophonist. Kenny Garrett’s career began when he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1978, led by Duke’s son, Mercer Ellington. Three years later, he played in the Mel Lewis Orchestra (performing Thad Jones’ music) and also in the Dannie Richmond Quartet (particularly working on Charles Mingus’ compositions). In 1984, he recorded his first album as a leader. Since then, he has composed 11 albums, many of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards…
