The Mayor of Nice presented the results of vigilance actions during the summer season that increased with the influx of tourists and vacationers to the present population.
Here are the most significant points of her speech.
Thanks to a coordinated action by the State services under the impetus of the Prefect, and the requisitions of the Procurator of the Republic, we managed to curb the street vendors on Cours Saleya, the pedestrian streets, the Promenade, and the Quai des États-Unis.”
The results are evident (since the beginning of July):
• 598 individuals removed,
• 76 street vendors were apprehended and handed over to the Judicial Police Officer with the merchandise seized.
• For the first time, custodial warnings have been issued.
63 arrests were made by the Municipal Police, including 46 thanks to the video surveillance system, accounting for 3/4 of the arrests. The CSU responded to 322 requisitions which helped solve as many offenses or crimes.
95 fines were issued based on the new aggressive begging ordinance passed last June. We secured placements for children identified as minors at risk, being encouraged to beg, and even enforced territorial bans.
A new regulation regarding street artists is being developed, which will allow for the free expression of artists without causing public disorder. It will be presented at the next city council meeting.
Regarding terraces, I announce to the merchants and their representatives that I have heard the difficulties posed by certain anomalies in the Roadway Regulation and the need to adapt the use of public spaces according to the seasons. I have already decided to present a resolution at the next city council meeting to revisit the application of the Pinel law for terraces. This will include a return to a uniform rate per zone, which will be much fairer for our merchants.
