Following the disturbances that took place after the World Cup final, Christian Estrosi wishes to lower the age of criminal responsibility to 16 years.
During the night of December 18th, after the World Cup final, law enforcement had to intervene. Groups of youths demonstrated gratuitous violence, and the police were compelled to interfere.
In response to this, Christian Estrosi expressed:
“I extend my full recognition to the National Police and the Municipal Police, who made 33 arrests in Nice. But we must learn the lessons from what happened in all major cities in France.”
The Mayor wishes to lower the age of criminal responsibility to 16 years, as an initial decision. He also wants to restrict the sale of fireworks online, following multiple complications. Christian Estrosi also questions the role of social media in this matter:
“I also believe we need to initiate a significant reflection on the role of social media since most of these delinquents film themselves to broadcast their actions and see themselves as heroes on TikTok or Snapchat.”
To conclude, the Mayor calls for the greatest strictness towards the individuals arrested. According to him, it is imperative for the State to show no leniency in the face of such disturbances.
