The MEPs rejected, with 368 votes against 274, the principle of reserving about thirty seats in the next Strasbourg chamber (taken from the 73 that the British will vacate following Brexit) for candidates from across the Union, chosen independently of their nationality by the various European political parties.
The vote is only consultative, as it is up to the Council (the member states) to decide.
This old proposal by European federalists does not inspire the Unionโs leaders either; it now seems unlikely that it could be voted on, especially since their unanimity is required for these constitutional matters.
