The future is to be built… This is particularly the purpose of the Macroscope Nice Côte Azur, an initiative by the Métropole Nice Côte Azur and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also “metropolitan,” whose first report has been published (data from 2011) and which will be released semi-annually.
While this observatory holds value, a downside is its late publication: Publishing and commenting on 2011 results at the end of April is not very conclusive regarding the decisions and actions to be undertaken in 2012, which may result in a timing mismatch. At worst, it may remain a simple statistical tool rather than a management one.
This dashboard will allow for a better understanding and grasp of the objective and shared numbers and data of socio-economic activity through more than sixty indicators, grouped by major families of strategic sectors such as employment, transportation, and housing…
The words of Bernard Kleynhoff, president of the CCI: “This allows us to have a tool to evaluate the actions undertaken and adjust the strategy according to the results obtained.”
The 2011 results
“The year 2011 has, in the end, seen the departmental economy hold up well. This good resilience is reflected by an overall revenue increase of 3% and an export increase of 3.5%,” continues the same Bernard Kleynhoff, illustrating these results.
These results are notably due to an excellent season as well as strong dynamics in the industrial sector, particularly the aromatic pole in Grasse.
The first trends for 2012 suggest a good first half of the year in continuity with the previous year, while the second quarter raises concerns with a potential business slowdown, especially considering less filled order books.
Alongside this cyclical situation analysis, two structural difficulties need attention: the rise in the number of job seekers (9.6% in the department) and the decrease in the number of business creations.
Christian Estrosi’s statement: “Our ambition, through the Métropole’s strategy, is particularly focused on projects like the Eco-Vallée and job revitalization. We hope to raise it to a significantly higher level in the upcoming years.”
