In the world, pregnancy too often represents a risk for women, forced to give birth alone, without assistance or medical care. Thus, in Africa, 162,000 of them die each year during their pregnancy or childbirth.
International organizations estimate that there is a global shortage of 350,000 midwives, even though they could prevent 90% of maternal deaths.
This is why AMREF (African Medical & Research Foundation), the first African NGO for public health, launched the “Stand Up for African Mothers” campaign in 2011, aiming to train 15,000 African midwives by 2015.
These midwives could help reduce the maternal mortality rate by 25% in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Midwives from around the world support this initiative and, on the occasion of their international day this Sunday, May 5, are organizing a demonstration at Place Masséna during which they will distribute the campaign bracelet to all new mothers.
This symbolic gesture will help promote this project and raise awareness of the role of midwives, both in France and Africa!
