On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of General de Gaulle’s historic appeal, the authorities unveiled the monument dedicated to him, located in the square that bears his name.

In the presence of Christian Estrosi, Deputy, Mayor of Nice, President of Nice Cรดte d’Azur, Jean-Michel Drevet, Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes & Eric Ciotti, President of the General Council, as well as Colonel Jean-Paul Mochin, Departmental Military Delegate, Commanding Officer of the Place d’Armes in Nice and Menton, Lieutenant-Colonel Gรฉrald Lacoste, President of the Foundation of Free France and Pierre Morissee, Honorary President of the Foundation of Free France.

“Whatever happens, the flame of French resistance must not and will not be extinguished!”

On June 18, 1940, while France experienced the darkest hours of its history, General de Gaulle, still unknown to the public, on a mission in London, refusing defeat and humiliation, broadcast his historic appeal on the BBC to resist and continue the fight in sacrifice and hope.
