- THIS IS NOT A FILM by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb
A film shot under semi-clandestine conditions that received the Carrosse d’Or award from the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival 2011
For months, director Jafar Panahi, sentenced in December to 6 years in prison with a 20-year ban from practicing his profession, has been awaiting the verdict of the appeal court.
Through the portrayal of a day in the life of Jafar Panahi, Jafar and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb offer us an insight into the current situation of Iranian cinema.
Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, co-director, was “prevented” from leaving Iran as he was preparing to go to Paris and then to the Toronto International Festival. He had his passport confiscated when he was supposed to board the plane on September 5th with his wife and son to promote the French release of the film, co-directed with Jafar Panahi, who is under house arrest in Tehran.
Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, who was able to attend Cannes last May, “is now banned from leaving Iranian territory and his personal belongings (laptop, notebooks) have also been confiscated by Iranian authorities,” his press officer in Paris specified. Only his wife and son were allowed to travel.
