As is customary, every week we bring you the selection of cinema releases. And for this start to the year 2023, let’s say that it is generous in terms of choices.
1. The Cyclades by Marc Fitoussi
Blandine and Magalie, old friends from long ago, reunite after many years. They head towards Greece, to the famous Cyclades archipelago, for sunny and exotic holidays. However, the journey doesn’t promise to be as idyllic as expected, due to the character of our two protagonists, who are not on the same wavelength. A refreshing comedy that also offers breathtaking panoramas of the sublime Greek archipelago. Guaranteed change of scenery.
2. The Big Shots by Julien Guetta
A film that tells us about the rivalry that confronts two brothers, played by Grรฉgoire Ludig and Jean-Paul Rouve. As Antoine learns of his father’s death, his brother Christian makes a sudden appearance at the funeral after many years of absence. The return of his extravagant brother won’t please Antoine much, as the two have many differences that set them apart. A touching dramatic comedy about forgiveness and family conflicts illustrated in a light-hearted manner.
3. The Rascals by Jimmy Laporal-Tresor
The plot immerses us in the carefree daily life of a group of young people from the suburbs in the mid-1980s. One of them, after being assaulted, finds his tormentor and decides to take justice into his own hands. Things take a difficult turn following this event. A film that depicts the rise of the far-right during this era, and the ensuing problems for young victims of injustice.
4. The Flight by Pietro Marcello
This is a loose adaptation of the novel “Alye parusa” by Aleksandr Grin. The story is set in a remote part of northern France, after the First World War. We follow the tale of Juliette, who lives alone with her father Raphaรซl, a former soldier who survived the war. The young girl, passionate about singing and music, meets a magician, who will change the course of her life. This historical romance offers subtle touches of fantasy, all wrapped in fabulously aesthetic imagery inspired by Impressionist paintings.
5. The Novice by Lauren Hadaway
An intense drama that depicts the determination of a young woman, Alex Dall, who joins her university’s rowing team. Solitary and determined, she will do everything to push her physical and mental limits to achieve her goal and always go further. A poignant film that tells the story of a young woman’s willpower, who is ready to do whatever it takes to succeed.
