Until May 3, 2015, the Musée des Merveilles in Tende will host the exhibition “Wools of Europe.” The exhibition “Wools of Europe” showcases around a hundred sheep breeds from 27 countries across the continent and wool products from 200 stakeholders in the industry.
An exhibition that finds its rightful place at the Departmental Museum of Wonders, fully integrating into the significant local pastoral tradition.
A 300 m² space is dedicated to discovering the great variety and beauty of European wool productions. To describe the biodiversity of sheep breeds in Europe, for each breed, there is a photo of the animal, its specific characteristics, the wool from its fleece, an item made from its wool (clothing, carpet, decorative object…), and a presentation of the object’s creator.
Since the Neolithic era, sheep farming has been a primary activity in the upper Roya Valley, still represented today by the presence of flocks of a locally renowned and appreciated breed known for its wool: the Brigasque sheep.
Through showcases, models, works, and multimedia tools, visitors will embark on the discovery of this essential material in the ancestral economy, which still holds strong artistic and economic potential today.
