This afternoon at 3 PM at the Palais Lascaris, the Nice historian and jazz musician Alex Benvenuto invites you to a stroll (and some tunes!) with the musicians who loved Nice, from Albรฉniz to Wagner, followed by Jazz starting from 1918, and the 1970s in Old Nice, the City of Jazz.
Nice has a long musical tradition. Operas, symphonic works, chamber music, all genres and forms of performance coexisted in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century with Jazz.
The attachment of the people of Nice to musical art has been evident since the Middle Ages, as depicted in Brรฉa’s paintings featuring musicians. The growth of tourism strengthened this habit with many musicians arriving in search of inspiration in Nice. The popular music of old Nice and the hinterland coexists with classical music in the new city, which even has a “musician’s district.”
The crowd thronged our Opera, which was alternately the Royal, then Imperial, and finally Municipal Theater. A beautiful example of loyalty to music despite changes in regime, and even nationality.
Alex Benvenuto invites the curious and music lovers: “We will take a stroll together with the musicians inspired by Nice, from Albรฉniz to Wagner, through various music venues, Opera houses or private salons, including the Nice school of violin making, and ending with the 1970s and Old Nice, the City of Jazz.”
