The National Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade, Slavery, and Their Abolitions

Latest News

May 10 was chosen in reference to May 10, 2001, the day when the Senate adopted the law recognizing the slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity.

This law notably established the Committee for the History and Memory of Slavery, an organization composed of qualified individuals, including representatives of associations defending the memory of slaves.

The committee is tasked with proposing, across the entire national territory, places and actions that ensure the perpetuation of the memory of this crime across generations.

Each year, the educational community organizes special moments of reflection and exchange during these commemorations.

Starting from elementary and middle school, subjects, particularly history and geography, enable all students to gain knowledge about the issue of slavery. This knowledge should allow them to develop a civic reflection on the respect for human dignity and the notion of a crime against humanity.

These days are also an opportunity to broaden the reflection to current issues such as human trafficking, forced labor in general, and child labor in particular.

In Nice, it was at Aimรฉ Cรฉsaire school, named after the writer and poet, that this commemoration took place in a friendly atmosphere where the words exchange and fraternity held their full value.

Wishes and projects were presented at the Camphor tree, a symbol of hope and life.
