The national jury of Villes et Villages Fleuris has confirmed the “Four Flowers” label held by the City of Nice since 1975 and has decided to award it a special mention for the development of the Promenade du Paillon.
Nice is a green city where the landscape receives great attention, with a constant desire to further beautify the environment through significant development projects.
The Promenade du Paillon, completed in October 2013, is among the largest projects carried out in the city center. Designed by Michel Pena, this development is a foundational act for the place of vegetation in the city. This redevelopment of public space with its games, water mirrors, and urban promenades proves to be a remarkable achievement in terms of landscaping, with a rich plant palette that captured the jury’s full attention, thus awarding it a special mention.
The Villes et Villages Fleuris competition involves awarding communes a series of “Flowers” (from one to four) corresponding to the criteria of the “Ville or Village Fleuri” label. These flowers are displayed on specific signage represented by a panel at the entrance of the commune. The objective of the Villes et Villages Fleuris label is to highlight communes that work towards creating an environment conducive to the well-being and reception of residents and tourists. It rewards actions by local authorities to promote a plant and natural heritage that improves the quality of life. The awarding of the Ville Fleurie or Village Fleuri label is done according to a specific charter based on three sets of criteria: “Landscape and plant heritage”, “Sustainable development and quality of life”, and “Tourist animation and enhancement”.
