Lou Presรจpi is a Niรงoise particularity, just like the term Calรจna, which denotes Christmas and whose root comes from the Latin word kalenda or calends, meaning the first day of the month in the Roman calendar.
It is known that the nativity scene was invented in the 13th century by Saint Francis of Assisi and that it subsequently spread throughout Europe. The Provenรงal tradition of santons is also well known.
The Niรงoise nativity scene or Presรจpi, which stood all year in homes, resembles the original nativity, which consists of the Baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary, the ox, and the donkey.
