The Naval Flower Battle in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Latest News

The demonstration, originally planned for Monday the 3rd, is postponed to Wednesday the 5th due to bad weather and rain.

A unique event in France: the flower battle on the water… A fleet of “pointus,” typical boats from the south of France, adorned with local flowers arranged in various patterns, parade in the port of Santé in Villefranche-sur-Mer before a large crowd gathered on the quays.

After passing in front of the public, the navigators in costume sail along the quays and throw their flowers at the spectators. The port, with its azure blue waters, becomes multicolored.

Many activities also take place on the quays with folk groups.

Each year, numerous families from Villefranche come with about fifteen boats to continue this century-old festival. The pointus (typical boats from the south of France) are thus passed down from generation to generation as a legacy of a unique culture. And even though they are no longer used for their original purpose, fishing, they have become a fantastic tool for transmitting the Mediterranean soul.

The Flower Battle is therefore the perfect opportunity to show the Azuréens and tourists these boats that are part of the Mediterranean heritage.

The Flower Battle attracts tourists every year, who come in large numbers to the Côte d’Azur for the festivities of the Nice Carnival and the Lemon Festival in Menton, allowing them to witness another form of flower battle.

For several years now, more than 8,000 people have been flocking to the quays of Villefranche-sur-Mer to admire this magical spectacle of a sea covered with a thousand flowers.
