The European collaborative project IRIS (Integrated and Replicable Solutions for Co-Creation in Sustainable Cities) has just been selected and validated by the European Commission, with French coordination by the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis.
Comprising 43 European partners and a total budget of 18 million euros, IRIS will empower the global smart city Nice Côte d’Azur to accelerate its energy transition and deploy solutions enabling residents to save money.
Innovative solutions will serve the residents, enhance their quality of life, and create jobs. A sum of 4.3 million euros will be allocated to the Nice ecosystem by the European Union as part of IRIS. The total budget is 18 million euros.
The IRIS project concretely involves a five-year experiment focusing on energy management through the implementation of innovative solutions in the fields of energy, transport, and information and communication technologies in three major smart cities in Europe: the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, the City of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and Gothenburg in Sweden.
The developed solutions will then be applied in four other cities: Vaasa in Finland, Alexandroupolis in Greece, Focsani in Romania, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain.
Starting at the end of 2017 and continuing for the next five years, the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis will experiment with the energy management of three districts in the Eco-Vallée Plaine du Var (Nice Meridia, Les Moulins, Grand Arénas) to optimize consumption: real-time management of buildings’ energy consumption, installation of electric vehicle charging stations, new methods of local renewable energy production (urban heating and cooling network using groundwater geothermal energy, recovery of heat from wastewater networks…), experimentation with a new generation of car-sharing vehicles, deployment of sensors…
