“The new philosophy of sport” by Daniel Herrero and Denis Tilinas at the CUM in Nice

Latest News

Daniel Herrero was a former high-level rugby player and coach of Toulon (French champion in 1987). Today, he is a teacher, writer, and sports columnist. “I have long traveled the paths of the Ovalie, the borderless territory of rugby enthusiasts,” writes Daniel Herrero in his “Loving Dictionary of Rugby.”

Rugby is a “barbarian sport played by gentlemen,” said Oscar Wilde as opposed to football, “a gentleman’s sport played by barbarians.”

Indeed, rugby is one of the rare sports that knows no hooliganism problems, where the referee is fully respected, and where tradition dictates that teams come together to share the famous “third half” in a shared ethic, aesthetics, and language.

Denis Tillinac himself wrote “Rugby Blues,” which wonderfully depicts the rites of this unique sport in lifestyle, its rituals, and its patriotism.

Together, they also pose the essential questions: what rules, what morals for today’s sport?

From Coubertin to the “money king,” what is the new philosophy of sport today?
