I am the Auto Show, under this disguised name, I hide a contemporary art festival dealing with the practice of self-portrait, self-representation, and more broadly the representation of the “self” in art. I was conceived and prepared by Espace A VENDRE in association with FRAC PACA to invest in 9 cultural venues in Nice through exhibitions, concerts, performances, screenings, and conferences.
To self-inaugurate, I invite you on November 25, 26, and 27 for three days of artistic events.
Everything begins on Thursday, November 25 at the WINDSOR Hotel with the opening of the exhibition “The Last of the Mohicans” curated by Cรฉcile MAINARDI (Noel DOLLA, Ben VAUTIER, Julien BOUILLON, …) and at the Sandrine MONS gallery which will welcome you at LOFT with a monograph of John COPPLANS. The next day, the day starts at the National Museum Marc CHAGALL at 4 PM with a conference/performance by Thierry LAGALLA announcing the “AUTO-COLLOQUIUM” (Eric DUCKAYERTS, Mathilde ROMAN, Maurice FRECHURET,..) itself followed at 6 PM by the opening at Atelier SOARDI (Philippe RAMETTE, Claude CLOSKY, Pierrick SORIN,…)
At 8 PM, meet at the MAMAC auditorium for a concert by Joรซl HUBAUT and Lรฉa LEBRICOMTE titled “Stone et Charnels,” then at 10 PM return to Atelier Soardi for two solo concerts by Jonathan CEJUDO and Laurent PREXL. On Saturday, November 27, we start the last day of events with the screening of “Body Double ‘X’” by Brice DELLSPERGER, at 5 PM in the MAMAC auditorium, followed by the openings of the exhibitions “(looking for) Maurizio CATTELAN” at Espace HALOGENE, the “Auto-Station” at the Station (Cedric TEISSEIRE, Florian PUGNAIRE, Karim Badi,…) and the last collective chapter of the Salon at DOJO. (Paul MC CARTHY & Mike KELLEY, ABSALON, Olaf Breuning ,…) This final evening will conclude with carte blanche to the “rotin discs ensemble” at Sun Sea Black, which will exceptionally reopen its doors at 9 PM for the occasion.
The 2010 AUTO Show offers the first in a series of artistic events centered around the artistic practice of self-portrait and more broadly the representation of the “self” in art. Initiated by the Galerie Espace A VENDRE and in collaboration with FRAC PACA, this preview takes place in 9 cultural venues in Nice* starting November 25, 2010.
The representation of oneself by the artist in their work is a common fact in art history. In a more contemporary history, due to the technical reproduction of the artwork, the artist has more opportunities to represent themselves. Through video, photography, performance and even in music, the visual artist can now be everywhere. This ego surge coincides with the proliferation of the representation of the “self” in society, notably through the digitization of our lives (cameras, internet, social networks, etc).
At the same time, the idea is to question the relationship to the other in this practice. Indeed, while the portrait, the representation of the other is a common practice in visual arts, the self-portrait also poses a relationship to the other: the other “self,” the other’s gaze on self, or even the simple place of the “self” in the world around us. Thus, the contemporary artist is everywhere, polymorphic, versatile, polycephalous… While often playing with their image, they can also become Narcissus, representing themselves using the different mediums of visual arts. Exhibitions explore the notion of the intimate, while a series of concerts highlights the presence of many visual artists in the musical universe. Finally, a round table at the Museum Chagall fleshes out the different aspects of the subject.
