Friends of the Children, an NGO created at the request of Sister Emmanuelle, was born from the encounter with Sister Emmanuelle and the children of Sudan. The ADE association responds to Sister Emmanuelle’s emergency call to assist the populations of Sudan, where the war has claimed more than 2 million lives.
Sudanese children are among the poorest on the planet and are witnessing the first genocide of our century. The peace agreement has not changed anything for the populations, tirelessly displaced into the desert. The horror is absolute. Mothers and children are primary victims: mistreated or tortured and starving. They live in utter poverty. Sanitary conditions are almost non-existent despite current efforts, and the mortality rates for women and children are alarming!!!! Children are dying of hunger every day!!!
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ADE ASSOCIATION:
ADE’s commitment to Sister Emmanuelle’s work is to raise funds to provide concrete aid on the ground in order to meet the essential needs of the populations.
Friends of the Children work in close collaboration with all associations created by Sister Emmanuelle in France and abroad and SUPPORT ALL OF SISTER EMMANUELLE’S PROGRAMS IN THE FIELDS OF HEALTH AND EDUCATION.
ADE’s specificity is to operate solely on a volunteer basis, thereby enabling it to donate all of the funds to Sister Emmanuelle’s children.
THE ORANGE SALE
The “Sudan Orange” operation allowed the ADE association to raise 250,000 euros.
The members of the ADE team, all volunteers, participate in events to sell oranges.
These actions reach between 5,000 and 70,000 people!!!
YALLA FOR THE CHILDREN!
“1 orange = 1 euro = 1 week of life for a child” is a principle inspired by Sister Emmanuelle’s action through the “Orange Operation” association, which aims to give one orange per week to the children of Sudan to provide them with the minimum vitamin intake necessary for their survival.
THE ADE TEAM IS A “YOUNG” TEAM
Many young people are part of the ADE team, making it increasingly dynamic!
Some have already demonstrated remarkable initiatives, organizing collections at their schools, conferences, concerts…, crowned with success to raise funds for the children!!!
ACTIONS
Friends of the Children have carried out numerous actions in the service of children, and each commitment has been respected.
The ADE association raises funds to help children by organizing charitable operations and participating in multiple events.
All donations collected by ADE are fully redistributed on the ground: one euro allows an emergency center to feed and educate a child for a week.
With the authorization of the Ministry of National Education, the association also intervenes in schools and businesses to raise awareness of international solidarity.
DONATION CIRCUIT ACCORDING TO THE AGREEMENT SIGNED BY SISTER EMMANUELLE:
Your Donation arrives at ADE
Your Donation is fully addressed to “Orange Operation
Your Donation is fully transferred to ASASE

SOURCE OF FUNDS
The source of funds comes from memberships, donations (from regional businesses and individuals), and orange sales. Events play a significant role in fund-raising. However, for now, the association receives no funding from the State, local authorities, or cities. Daily operations rely on the personal actions of founding members and volunteers.
DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS
The distribution of collected funds is 98% directed to the association’s action (with 2% reserved for administrative obligations: auditors, etc.).
Friends of the Children fund the programs of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, initiated by Sister Emmanuelle’s Mission, through direct bank transfers.
Adolescents from the streets are hosted; our two farms accommodate 416 adolescents. A third farm is under construction and will accommodate 165 adolescents. In the morning, they attend school & in the afternoon, they participate in professional training workshops.
Since the beginning of the program, 216 adolescents rescued from the street have pursued university studies, among them, 43 have already graduated. With 197 €, we ensure the funding of secondary schooling for 1 year and with 177 € for primary education.
IN SUDAN, THE ADE ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS ALL OF SISTER EMMANUELLE’S PROGRAMS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SVDP (our partner Kamal Tadros, General Secretary, Responsible for Saint Vincent De Paul in Sudan), Friends of the Children collect funds fully addressed to contribute to the operational costs of all programs in Sudan.
ADULT VOCATIONAL TRAINING
In 6 months, one can learn masonry, welding, sewing, agricultural techniques, leatherwork, tailoring, embroidery, refrigeration and air-conditioning techniques, carpentry, electricity, and computer skills… The average cost of training is 282 Euros per student.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
2 mobile clinics, 3 outpatient clinics, one of which has a prenatal care center, provide care 5 days a week to displaced children attending the 60 schools of the archdiocese. We also have 4 permanent dispensaries providing nearly 25,000 consultations per year. Two of them are located in our farms for adolescents.
Medications are purchased within the country and account for 60% of the total program costs.
The ADE association also fully funded the purchase of an equipped mobile clinic that has been operational since June 2008.
The Homes:
Orphans or separated from their parents by the war, these children are taken in by Sudanese authorities and entrusted to the association. Each of the association’s 7 homes hosts about 20 children who receive Food, Medical Care, Education, and the Affection needed for a child’s life. With 876 €, we fully support a child in a home for 1 year, including school fees.
FEEDING IN SUDAN/OTHER PROGRAMS
Potable water supply
In the Khartoum region, temperatures can rise up to 45°C in the shade. 3 tanker trucks provide 120,000 liters of potable water daily to the displaced camps and the 60 schools of the Archdiocese of Khartoum located there. Each of our farms also has a well where surrounding populations come to get water. With 54 €, we ensure the funding for one day of supply.
Assistance to the disabled
Each year, about 50 tricycles and prosthetics are manufactured and distributed.
Assistance to elderly Muslim people
SINCE 2009, OPENING OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER IN LOLOGO, SOUTH SUDAN WHICH INCLUDES:
A professional training center in MASONRY, ELECTRICITY, CARPENTRY
Taking into account the multicultural environment of this region, courses are given in both Arabic and English and include training on natural resource management, national economy, and the value of professional training within the context of national development.
Out of 120 students (aged 18 to 40), 76 apprentices have finally graduated, which is 63% of the total enrolled. Among the graduates, 5 are women, of whom 3 (electricians) are now employed by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), and 5 men from the same cohort.
Since the second session, the Government of the South wishes to grant the center official recognition of these diplomas.
Child nutrition program
Since the center’s opening, hundreds of ragged and malnourished children have come there every day. A truly nourishing and balanced feeding program has been set up for the 200 youngest, five days a week.
Agricultural projects
A tree planting activity is currently underway to take advantage of the rainy season. The long-term goal is to compensate for the loss of dozens of trees felled during the war by the army or civilians who gathered wood for fuel.
Future investments
Quality products manufactured by carpentry trainees could easily find a place in a market currently dominated by high-priced imported furniture. This project would require the purchase of a multi-function woodworking machine and a special saw (about 4000 € in total).
IN VIETNAM: KINDERGARTEN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN SOUTH VIETNAM
In June 2010, the ADE association held an auction to ensure funding, in partnership with the Community of Vietnamese Dominican Little Sisters, for the construction of a school.
