The Nice prison saga continues. Just like in TV series, one episode follows another.
While everyone agrees on one point—the inadequacy of the current facility in Nice—everyone else defends their own interests.
All the options presented by the Prefects in charge and the Ministers of Justice are valid as long as they do not involve their own territories.
This holds true for the mayors of Saint-Laurent and neighboring municipalities (La Baronne option), and the Paillon Valley (Tercier Plateau option) for the most recent proposals.
Christian Estrosi has accepted the renovation of the current prison, whose decrepitude is visible, and the assurance that if a second penitentiary is ever built, it will be “extra muros.” Being compatible with Macron’s policies certainly has its benefits.
As for the rest, the fog is not likely to lift anytime soon.
Meanwhile, we’re awaiting the next visit from a Minister of Justice, who will make a new proposal that will be rejected by local officials…
What is the general interest?
While visiting the Alpes-Maritimes department, Nicole Belloubet, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, announced that the Tercier Plateau was being considered for the construction of a new prison. The officials of the 13 municipalities of the Paillon Valley said no.
We were expecting some announcements from the Keeper of the Seals Nicole Belloubet, and we got them: the detention center, currently at 12 Rue de la Gendarmerie in Nice, would be preserved and renovated.
A new facility is being considered near La Trinité on the Tercier Plateau. This would be the second option after the one proposed in Saint-Laurent du Var.
This is seen as provocation by the officials of the Paillon Valley, who are calling on residents to mobilize to “defeat this project which, in addition to its negative impact on the life and activities of the valley, would result in the destruction of a rich fauna and flora heritage in the Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest of the Tercier Plateau.”
