The Story of Grosse Patate

“Grosse Patate is the nickname they give her at school because she eats all the time. She knows she is round and sweet. In her class, there is Rosemarie the shy one, Rรฉmi her punching bag, scared like a girl, and Hubert whom everyone is in love with. Grosse Patate tells in her diary the sadness, happiness, questions of a little girl trying to understand the world. A text that speaks of friendship, love, grief, difference in a funny and inventive language. Interspersed with ‘dreams,’ The Diary of Grosse Patate by Dominique Richard advances through fragments, scenes of life (class, play, group) where the first friendships, the first loves, and the rejections and betrayals that accompany them take place.”

The Staging

The staging is centered on Grosse Patate’s bedroom. The bedroom consists of a loft bed incorporating three colorful nesting tables; they serve as a toy box with their drawers and chests from which the accessories will be taken out. Separating from the bed, the tables will serve in turn as a kitchen table, a desk, a refuge, stairs. The director chooses three levels of play to adapt the diary to the stage: Grosse Patate’s narrative, the paradoxical dialogue with Rรฉmi, a silent role, and puppet-dolls representing friend Rosemarie and the dandy Hubert. These scenes are metronomically interspersed, as in the text, with interludes representing Grosse Patate’s dreams haunted by the man in black.
