That’s why every new registered donor represents an extra chance, even a unique one, for these patients to find their donor, and potentially save their lives.
From September 15 to 21, 2008, the 3rd national week of mobilization for bone marrow donation takes place.
The year 2008 is looking less favorable than 2007. Since the beginning of this year, there has been a noticeable decrease in registrations on the French Register.
*In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur:*
• Since January 1, 2008, 508 new donors in the region have registered on the national Register. More than 670 other people need to register by the end of the year for the region to reach its minimum goal.
For comparison, 1,107 new donors registered in 2007.
*Some key figures for the Nice file in 2007:*
• 9,528 bone marrow donors in the region registered on the national Register
• 8 donors solicited to donate bone marrow to a patient
• 37 patients transplanted in Nice thanks to donors (outside the family circle) from France and abroad.
*Last year, very encouraging results were recorded at the national level:*
• 17,232 new donors registered during the year on the French Register,
• an increase of more than 20% in bone marrow transplants from non-family donors.
• nearly 160,000 donors registered on the French Register
As part of the 3rd national week of mobilization for bone marrow donation, the French Blood Establishment (EFS), the Biomedicine Agency, and the Nice University Hospital are calling on the solidarity of blood donors to encourage them to also register as bone marrow donors.
In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, regular blood donors, registered on the EFS files, will receive, during the second half of September, a letter raising their awareness of the importance of becoming bone marrow donors, along with a registration request to be returned filled out to the national Register if they wish. In total, 150,000 blood donors across France will be personally made aware.
