“The NIce Citoyenne Et Altermondialiste list, 100% left-wing, 100% ecological, reaffirms its opposition to the National Interest Operation for two fundamental reasons: this operation is anti-democratic and anti-ecological:
Anti-democratic: the OIN is decided and led by the State alone, reminiscent of the time before the decentralization of 1983. Not only are local authorities not even consulted, but more seriously, the populations concerned by the future perimeter of the OIN are deliberately kept out of the loop. For example, the city council of Nice has never voted on any deliberations concerning this matter. No public consultation process has been organized. The approach is authoritarian and outdated!
Anti-ecological: the OIN is expected to cover about 10,000 hectares (which is twice the area of the city of Nice!), involve the construction of a new city, and pave the way for a major new port, lead to the construction of 5 new bridges over the Var, and thus endanger the aquifer that provides water for a third of the department, the Natura 2000 protected area in the river estuary, and destroy the last agricultural spaces in the Var plain.
This gigantic operation, for which mystifyingly no funding is planned, contradicts the Territorial Planning Directive and the very notion of sustainable development: the opacity regarding the OIN must end, a citizen mobilization is essential, as was the case a few years ago against the A8 bis and the project to expand the cruise port of Nice.
