The number of deaths on the roads of mainland France decreased by 7.5% in May. Two hundred and forty-eight people were killed, which is 20 fewer than in May 2018.

This figure reverses the upward trend recorded since January, announced by Road Safety.

In the first five months of 2019, the authorities recorded nine fewer deaths (1,225, -0.7%) compared to the same period last year, a year that ended with a “historic” low in the mainland (3,248 killed, 3,488 including the Overseas Territories).

The authorities particularly lamented a “relaxation of [drivers’] behavior induced by the destroyed speed cameras” within the framework of the “yellow vests” movement, which aimed to protest the reduction of the speed limit from 90 km/h to 80 km/h on 400,000 kilometers of secondary roads.
