Le Patriote Côte d’Azur calls for support. The newspaper is going through a difficult financial period. This situation concerns an old title, born in secrecy, and still present in the media landscape of the Alpes-Maritimes. A subscription is open. A public event is also announced for February 2026.
The Le Patriote Côte d’Azur is in danger. In a serious financial situation, the editorial team is calling for tangible mobilization. This approach is part of a context of reduced press pluralism.
The newspaper defines itself as “a free, committed, popular journal, deriving from the communist Resistance, faithful to the ideal of human and social emancipation.” This identity spans decades. This line remains claimed today. Le Patriote Côte d’Azur presents itself as an independent title from financial powers. The local anchoring in the Alpes-Maritimes remains central.
The editorial team highlights a risk. The disappearance of the newspaper would result in the loss of “an entire section of memory and social struggle.” This statement refers to a history marked by political, social, and democratic fights. Le Patriote Côte d’Azur is part of this continuity.
Public Recognition and Financial Alert
During the meeting organized by the Club de la Presse Méditerranée 06 last Monday, Le Patriote Côte d’Azur was acknowledged by the journalists present. This recognition took place in front of the candidates for Nice’s municipal elections. The editorial team talks about public recognition and a tribute to those who have kept the newspaper alive for decades.
This recognition is not enough to ensure economic sustainability. The media is in a severe financial crisis. The printing costs weigh heavily on the accounts. Distribution fees add to the costs, with high operating expenses… On the other hand, advertising resources are dwindling, as are the activist supports that are also diminishing.
The editorial board reiterates a simple goal. To continue appearing in the kiosks. To continue informing. To continue debating. To continue “giving a voice to those we never hear elsewhere.” This ambition requires immediate financial resources.
The media management emphasizes the importance of action. “Each donation is an act of resistance and freedom.” This phrase forms the call. The financial contribution is presented as support for independent press and democracy.
A subscription has recently been opened with specific terms: checks should be sent to the order of Alpes Azur Éditions. The provided address is: 54 avenue du général De Gaulle, 06340 La Trinité. The editorial team also invites people to include a message of support. These messages will be published in upcoming editions.
A Public Event in February 2026
In parallel, the Fête du Patriote Côte d’Azur 2026 has been announced. It will be held on Sunday, February 1st, 2026. The event will take place at the Théâtre de l’Hélice in Contes. This day is part of an annual tradition.
The editorial team presents this event as “a significant time for meeting, reflection, and exchanges.” The topics will address democratic issues. The role of the press in public life will be the focus of discussions. The debate will focus on: “the freedom of the press and media: a counter-power to protect.” Numerous media outlets will be represented.
A collective moment is also announced. The Patriote banquet will close the day. The participation fee is set at 20 euros per adult. The children’s rate is 10 euros. Confirmation of attendance is requested by email at patriotecotedazur@gmail.com to better organize on the big day.
The editorial team specifies the setting. This event is open to all those committed to the freedom to inform.
A Newspaper Rooted in History
Le Patriote Côte d’Azur is a weekly newspaper with a communist sensibility. Its distribution covers the Alpes-Maritimes. It is published on Thursdays on its website. The origin of the newspaper dates back to World War II. It was created in secrecy. The title became official after the Liberation, then managed by communist deputy Virgile Barel.
Throughout its history, the newspaper has had several names. The Patriote niçois became Le Patriote de Nice et du Sud-Est in 1945. Its daily publication continued until 1967. The title was part of the founding newspapers of the Union française de l’information, an agency bringing together nearly a hundred local newspapers born from the Resistance.
The 1950s marked a decline in circulation. The newspaper subscribed to despatches from the Union française de l’information. A general decline impacted regional communist dailies. Figures show a gradual decrease between 1951 and 1953. Circulation decreased from 38,500 copies to 30,900.
During the Algerian War, the newspaper’s offices were set on fire. Support for Algerian independence is mentioned as a probable cause. In 1967, financial difficulties led to temporary disappearance from kiosks. The title reappeared later under the name Patriote Côte d’Azur. Publication continued until May 2013 before judicial liquidation. A few employees were still working for the newspaper at that time.
A revival took place on October 3rd, 2013. Le Patriote Côte d’Azur returned with a new format. The newspaper now has 12 pages, sometimes 16. The paper version is available in kiosks. A digital PDF version has been available by subscription since April 2019.
The call launched today is part of this long history. The editorial team seeks direct support. The goal remains the continuity of an old title. Financial mobilization determines the future.
