The Patriotic Memory of the 1914-1918 War in the Centennial Commemorations

A unique splendor and a 5-year program will be the pillars of the commemoration of the Centenary of the 1914-1918 War in Nice. This war, the “Great War,” as it was called, is considered the first modern war.

Considered one of the most significant events of the 20th century, this war reached an unprecedented scale and intensity. It involved more soldiers, caused more deaths, and resulted in more material destruction than any previous war.

More than 60 million soldiers took part in it. During this war, about 9 million people died, and about 20 million were injured.

“The memory of the past must be accompanied by respect for the dead and openness to the world,” emphasized Christian Estrosi during the presentation to the authorities and the associative world of the events that will take place over the next five years.

The first event, the inauguration in a few weeks, will take place on a renovated Quai des Etats-Unis, whose name evokes the commitment of the American Nation and its “boys” who came to fight (and for many, die) on European soil.

A five-year program has thus been planned, with key moments, knowing that each year this commemoration will include three types of operations: Cultural operations, such as historical exhibitions, concerts, cinema; Event operations and classic patriotic commemorations.

All cultural establishments in the city will be involved at one time or another, to create this synergy. Mrs. Duvigneau, the new director of the Archives, will be in charge of the scientific coordination of the whole.
