Tribute to Max Barel
A communist, graduate of the École Polytechnique, and artillery lieutenant in 1940, he chose to resign from the army rather than swear an oath to Pétain.
A resistance member, he was arrested by the Gestapo on July 6, 1944, on the platforms of the Lyon-Perrache train station.
Imprisoned and tortured for 4 days and 5 nights by torturers under the orders of Klaus Barbie, Max did not speak. He kept the names of his comrades in combat secret until his death.
In the likeness of his father Virgile, a Popular Front deputy for the Alpes-Maritimes, Max’s commitment is total, driven by his communist ideal like tens of thousands of others.
