The recent events concerning migrants from the Roya who came to register as refugees, making headlines for two or three days (by the way, where did they go?), with the local Gandhi, Eric Hourreu, taking the spotlight in his apparent quest for fifteen minutes of fame, remain without a logical explanation.
There is a factual reality: hundreds of migrants are staying in deplorable conditions, who have the right to asylum under international conventions that are not being upheld by the designated authorities (the Prefecture).
Instead of addressing the needs, the humanitarian efforts of volunteers, activists, and others are allowed to flourish, who take advantage of the media attention on these events to turn themselves into figures… in search of authors!
A proud supporter of an open immigration policy, the local Communist party has been calling for months for the creation of a reception and orientation center in Nice to enable access to rights “for these vulnerable people who are searching for peace and a dignified life”.
According to the departmental secretary Cรฉcile Dumas, “The Prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes has been showing a complete lack of humanity and a significant disregard for international legal texts for months. Moreover, the Prefect has already been condemned by the administrative court.”
Her assessment of the current situation is harsh: “It is simply pathetic, shameful, and unworthy of our country.”
For her: “It is unacceptable that the prefecture is unable to provide a daily administrative presence in the Roya valley.”
Conclusion? “It is urgent that the State responds to the needs of these migrants and not rely solely on the support of associations and citizens.”
