People feed on legends, and the people of Nice have theirs: Catherine (Catarina in Niçois) Ségurane …
History (?) tells us the life of a washerwoman who lived in the 16th century and distinguished herself during the siege of Nice in 1543. An emblematic figure of the Niçois region, she embodies a strong patriotic and identity sentiment.
True or not, each year the authorities pay homage to her by placing a wreath at the plaque in her honor in front of the Church of Saint Augustine (where Giuseppe Garibaldi, a hero… somewhat more credible, was baptized).
Even the church recognizes Catarina Ségurane as a heroine. A religious service was celebrated by the episcopal vicar in the presence of local associations, who, after the service, allowed attendees to enjoy their artistic talent in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
