For those who want to discover, Pilou is a Niçoise sport, requiring high acrobatics and great dexterity. It is played with next to nothing: a holed coin and a bit of paper serving as a shuttlecock. Yet, it is gaining increasing popularity among the youth.
You can play it for fun by making beautiful passes. In competition, the goal is to drop the pilou into the opponent’s circle in teams of two. More than forty teams, among the best, faced each other last Saturday in Coaraze. Initiations and demonstrations took place during those evenings to introduce the unique aspects of the sport. They will be led by the Nissa Pilo team; its best players and trainers, Denis Olivier, Elie Gallo, Ninou Bernardi, René Bodenès, Emmanuel Nicolai, Christian Delobette, Denis Scano, Jean-Paul Robbi, José Maria, and André Giordan will offer you their expert advice. The organizers hope to see many French and foreign visitors practicing with the “little coin” again this year…
For skilled players, training sessions are scheduled concurrently in preparation for the Grand Tournament of Vieux-Nice. This year, it will again be held at Place Garibaldi, in early September for Saint Bartholomew’s Day. These Friday Pilou meetings conclude with a Pan bagnat and other Niçoise delicacies… on the beach afterwards… with songs or other spontaneously organized performances…
