From Thursday, January 15, 2026, nearly 8% of the dwellings in the municipality, or about 19,000 dwellings randomly selected by INSEE, will be surveyed in Nice. The population census helps to determine the official population of the municipality. According to the latest figures published by INSEE, Nice had 353,701 residents in 2022. This data serves as the basis for several institutional calculations.

The census also helps to calculate the state’s financial contribution to the municipal budget, through the Global Operating Grant. The number of elected officials sitting on the City Council also depends on these figures. These elements structure local democratic functioning and the resources allocated to the community.

The census also provides information about housing, modes of transportation, and the age of the inhabitants. These data allow local governments to implement public policies. The projects that are implemented rely on these results to meet the needs of the population.

Every year, a different sample of the population is surveyed. This method ensures regular updating of data. Participation in the census remains a mandatory civic duty. Each randomly selected citizen is required to answer the provided questionnaires.

Conducting the Census in Nice

For those affected, a letter will be placed in the mailbox at the beginning of January. This letter informs about the participation in the 2026 population census. This initial step precedes the visit of the census officer.

A census officer, equipped with an official card, will then visit the home. The officer will provide questionnaires for online completion at www.le-recensement-et-moi.fr. In some cases, a housing form and as many individual forms as there are people living in the dwelling will be provided.

Once the documents are completed, several solutions are available. The mandated officer can visit the home to collect the documents. Those surveyed can also return the questionnaires free of charge using the prepaid envelope left by the census officer. A third option is to drop off the documents at one of the locations provided by the city.

Drop-offs are possible from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The Corvésy building remains open until 6:00 PM. Documents can be dropped off at the Election Service, located at 4 rue Ribotti. The Civil Status Service, Corvésy building, an annex of the City Hall, at 6 rue Alexandre Mari, also welcomes responses.

Several annex town halls participate in the operation. Drop-offs are possible at the Nice + Easy Public Services House, at 6 rue Tonduti de l’Escarène. The Ariane site, at 54 rue Anatole de Monzie, and the Caucade site, at Caucade Square opposite 78 Sainte Marguerite Avenue, are also involved.

Residents can also visit Magnan, at 118 rue de France. The Pasteur – Bon Voyage site, at 1 Roman Way, is listed. The Ray, at Fontaine du Temple Square, and Saint-Augustin, at 75 Boulevard Paul Montel, also participate in the scheme. The Saint-Roch Public Services House, at 50 Saint Roch Boulevard, 1st floor, as well as Thiole – Malausséna, at 32 Malausséna Avenue, complete the network of deposit points.

Solutions for All Audiences

For residents concerned about the 2026 survey who do not have computer tools, the city of Nice provides computers. These facilities are accessible at the Election Service and the Civil Status Service, annex of City Hall Corvésy. The Ariane and Pasteur annex town halls also offer this access, provided they bring the IDs previously provided by the census officer.

A computer is also available at the “26 MLK” social center, located at 26 Martin Luther King Avenue. This availability aims to guarantee access to the census for all those concerned.

The responses remain strictly confidential. The information collected is used only for statistical purposes and is kept anonymous. The National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL) ensures data confidentiality.

Those wishing to know if a dwelling is part of the census can obtain additional information. Verification of the census officer’s name is possible. Information can be obtained by phone at 04 97 13 56 80. An email address is also available: recensement-population@ville-nice.fr.

This census campaign is part of the national schedule. Participation of the selected residents determines the quality of the data produced. In Nice, the operation will take place from Thursday, January 15 to Saturday, February 21, 2026 inclusive.
